Biography

Sophia Duvall was born on March 18, 1716/17 in Queen Anne's Parish, Prince George's, Maryland. She was the daughter of Benjamin Duvall and Sophia Griffith (Newman and the Alabama Surname Files use this date, but there is a Maryland birth index record that shows 1719, although this would make her very young at first marriage.)^[1][2][3]

In 1732, she married Thomas Butt in Queen Anne's Parish, Prince George's, Maryland.^[4] They had four children - Thomas, Mary, Elizabeth, and Edward Richard.

Thomas died intestate sometime before May 1757 (when two of his sons transacted realty and referred to their "late father.") In September 1757, Sophia is named Administrator of her late husband's estate.

On Mar 18, 1758, Sophia married Thomas Baldwin in Prince George's County, Maryland. They had three children together - Sophia, Zachariah, and William.

On May 11, 1858, Thomas Baldwin is named Administrator of Thomas Butt's estate. An inventory of the estate is prepared, and the estate is appraised in August 1758 by kinsman George Medcalf. On November 17, 1758, an account of the estate was filed "by Thomas Baldwin who married the widow of Thomas Butt, late of Prince Georges County, deceased", showed tobacco valued at $30/2/8 paid to "Robert Tyler who married Mary one of the daughters of the deceased" the same amount to "Thomas Butt and Edward Butt their proportional share of their father's estate", and the same amount to "Joseph Perry who married Elizabeth one of the daughters of the deceased".^[1]

She passed away some time after June 13, 1804, when her husband's estate was probated.^[1]

Sophia Griffin was born in 1716. She passed away in 1804.
