Name: Peter Edwards [1] [2]
of Peterborough, Northamptonshire and Alwalton, co. Huntingdon, England.

Birth

Born: Say 1490. [1]
Rough estimated date based on him having a married daughter and grandchild in 1535.
PeterEdwards was likely born at Petersborowe, Northamptonshire, England, as it was spelled at the time of his 1490 birth.[3] Today, this spot is known as Peterborough and is no longer part of Ceremonial County of Northamptonshire. Now this location falls within the county of Cambridgeshire.

Marriage and Children

Married: 1st: Unknown Wife, by whom he had a daughter Joan.
Married: 2nd - Susanna Samwell, as her second husband, between 11 August 1533 and 2 August 1535. [1]
Dates her first husband made his will, and when she is mentioned as having remarried in the will of William Bond.
Children of Peter Edwards and his Unknown 1st wife:
  1. Joan Edwards. Born say 1514. She married William Barrett by 1535. She was last known living on 8 July1537 when named in the will of her husband.
Children of Peter Edwards and Susanna Samwell: [1]
  1. Edward Edwards. Born say 1537.
  2. Rev. Nicholas Edwards, born about 1545 (age 18 in 1563). He left a will dated 18 July 1625 and proved 20 April 1627.
  3. Amy Edwards, born say 1547. Named in her uncle Francis Samwell's will in 1585, and in her brother Edward's will in 1591. Married by 24 November 1585 to Thomas Ludlowe. Probably the Amy Ludlowe buried 2 December 1614 at Kingsthorpe, Northamptonshire, England.

Death

Died: Between 14 October 1550 and 3 October 1551.
Dates his will was made and proved. [1]
Will: His will is no longer extant but is referred to in other documents which give us the dates.
Consistory Court of Peterborough, act books, 1547-1582, fol. 21v. [FHL film #189821]: "At Peterborough ... the third day of the month of October in the year 1551. The will of Peter Edward, late of the city of Peterborough, deceased: On which day there appeared personally ... Susan Edwarde, relict of the said deceased and executrix, named in this will, etc. And she exhibited the will of the same man, which the lord at her request proved and approved, and he committed to her the administration of these goods ... she exhibited an inventory, extending to the sum of £84 15s. Sd."

Research Notes

First Marriage: In 1535, a thirty-year lease of the manor of Alwalton was granted to Peter Edwards, William Barrett, his wife Joan daughter of the said Peter Edwards, and their son Richard Barrett. Later, in 1535 the name of Peter Edwards' second wife Susanna was inserted into this lease with the consent of the abbot. After Peter Edwards' death, Susan obtained the reversion of the lease and later with her new husband obtained a new lease. In 1561, her step son tried to recover his interest in the manor but apparently failed. The lease of Alwalton would pass to her son Edward Edwards and then to his son Peter Edwards. [2] [4]
From this transaction a number of conclusions can be reached. First, Peter Edwards had an unknown 1st wife by whom he had a daughter. Second, Peter Edwards was a grandfather by 1535 and likely considerably older than Susanna Samwell. Third, his marriage to Susanna Samwell likely occurred in 1535.
Arms: The Edwards family occurs in the Visitation of Huntingdon where it is noted that "the arms of Edwards are annexed in MS. Coll. Arms." however thay are not given. [5]

According to Randy A. West, "The American Genealogist 88 (2016):302-309," New Information on the Edwards Ancestry of Alice1 (Freeman) (Tompson) Parke of Roxbury, Massachusetts and Connecticut", Peter Edwards had a daughter Joan by first wife, last name unknown and two additional children Nicholas and Amy by 2nd wife Susanna Samwell. I am not able to add these other people to Peter's profile as I am not pre-1500 certified.

Thanks for maintaining this profile. Here's a free link to the "History of Huntingdon" source https://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/hunts/vol3/pp133-136 and to the "Visitation of Huntingdon" https://archive.org/details/visitationofcoun00charrich/page/112/mode/2up

I'd add them but I'm not pre-1500 certified. Also one suggestion, since his grandson Richard Barrett was named in the lease, I'd think that Richard must have been at least 21. If his mother Joan was (say) 25 when Richard was born, and Peter Edwards was (say) 25 when Joan was born, that makes Peter at least 71 by 1535. Round up to 75 and that makes Peter born about 1460, rather than 1490. Obviously I could be wrong about this, but it seems that for Richard to have been named on the lease he would have been of legal age.

Edwards-886 and Edwards-215 appear to represent the same person because: exact same vitals, one has the spouse's parents from the other profile [Sewell]; these two interlock, and are the same person.
