Marthe Hansdatter was born at Øvre Egge-eie under Øvre Egge, Brandbu (today in Gran) and christened 15 May 1803 [1]
Marthe Hansdatter married Guldbrand Andersen from Egge in Gran parish 1 Nov 1827[2]
They lived at Egge farm until 1829, when they moved to Strandbakken under Strande farm in Vestre Toten Stories: One day when Guldbrand had been making "hemper og meler" (hooks and eyes) for Marthe, a hen was observed picking them up and eating them. Marthe sliced open its gullet, removed the hooks and eyes and sewed it back up again. The hen recovered. The Strandbakken (Beach Hill) was a mile in length, and the children enjoyed the long winding ride in the winter on their sleds. They had a favorite horse, or Norwegian Mountain pony, which the children would ride. After Guldbrand's death of typhoid fever in 1848, Marthe was left with seven children aged two to nineteen. the older children left home to work out. Ingeborg left Norway in 1850 with her cousin Hans Eggebraaten, her uncles Peder Ruen, Iver Sonsteby and her aunt Anne Svensrud.
Two years later, 22 Apr 1852, Marthe and her six other children decided to venture to America as their relatives had successfully established homes there.[3]
They went first to Kilbourn, Wisconsin, where they lived for several years. Berthe moved to southern Minnesota with her older sister Elena, when Elena married Gulbrand Gorgen, and they settled on a farm near New Richmond. Marthe moved to Glenwood Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa. She lived to see her children established on prosperous farms. She died on June 19, 1871 and is buried in the Sivesind Cemetery near her home.

An elder sister called Marthe was 2 years old at Øvre Egge, Brandbu in census 1801[4]. She was buried 1 Aug 1802
