Joseph was born in 1678. He passed away in 1730. Archaeologists have found a possible Eggleston cemetary near the intersection of Ironbound Road and Jamestown Road (route 31). Issue:

  • Richard Eggleston, b. 1720 d. 1781
  • William Eggleston, b. 1720; d. 1791.
  • Anne Eggleston, b. bet. 1720-1730.
  • Joseph Eggleston, II, b. 1721; d. 02 Dec 1792.
  • Elizabeth Eggleston, b. 22 Apr 1723; m. William Wyatt; d. 13 Jun 1787.
  • John Eggleston, b. 1725; d. 1800.
  • Edmund Eggleston, b. 1729; d. 1809.

Joseph and Anne had these children:

  • Elizabeth (who married with William Wyatt of Caroline Co.

His son Joseph II gave the dates of his father`s birth and death in a family prayerbook described in P H Baskervill, Andrew Meade of Ireland and Virginia, page 122. Also noted are the birth dates of his children. In 1702, As an officer in the county militia, he signed an appeal to the king. Also signing the appeal as an officer was Benjamin Eggleston, who could have been either Joseph`s father or his brother. Joseph served in the House of Delegates from James City from 1727 to 1732. In 1730 he was fined for being absent from meetings. Beginning about 1731 he acquired lands to the west in the then frontier of Virginia in what became Amelia and Powhatan counties. He gave these tracts to his sons William and Richard.
