Charles was born about 1772. He is the son of Josiah Ellis and Jane Shelton.

"Josiah, (my grandfather,) above named, inherited the "Red Hill" estate, and lived and died there. His wife---- a daughter of Richard Shelton (Jane) ----was born September 1, 1747. They were married on the 3d of April, 1766, and had issue John, Nancy, Charles, Richard Shelton, Josiah, Mary Wright, Thomas Harding, Jane Shelton, Lewis, Joshua Shelton, and Powhatan." Dictionary of Virginia Biography[2] gives some circumstantial background ... "Thomas Harding Ellis (6 September 1814–11 April 1898), president of the James River and Kanawha Company, was the son of Charles Ellis, a Richmond merchant, and Margaret Keeling Nimmo Ellis and was born at his uncle's Clover Green plantation in the part of Campbell County that later became Appomattox County. He received his early education at private schools and graduated from the University of Virginia in 1833. He joined his father's business, but left in the spring of 1836 to become private secretary to his uncle Powhatan Ellis, the United States chargé d'affaires..."
He passed away in 1840.
