Biography

The following information is from a family Bible held by Pearl (Freeman) Breining[1] Sarah Emerson was born in Stoddard, New Hampshire on January 3, 1781.

The Gorton family arrived at Snows Landing (now Rawsonville, Michigan) on May 20, 1825. They crossed Lake Erie in the Schooner Red-Jacket to Detroit then in a barge to Snows Landing, up the Huron River.

Sarah married Job Gorton (1776-1854). Their children:

  • John Gorton - (b. 19 Nov 1800, New Lisbon, New York)
  • Nancy Gorton - (b. 17 Nov 1802, New Lisbon, New York)
  • Olive Gorton - (b. 30 Sept 1804, New Lisbon, New York) - First teacher in Ypsilanti, took up teaching at 15 y.o. Married Lyman Graves, son Albert Graves.
  • Almira Gorton - (b. 9 Mar 1808, New Lisbon, New York)
  • Johnathan Gorton - (b. 6 Aug, 1810, Fabius, New York) - Ran the first store in Ypsilanti.
  • Richard Gorton - (b. 11 December 1811, Fabius, New York)
  • Marietta Gorton - (b. 23 December 1814, Fabius, New York)
  • Catherine Gorton - (b. 19 May 1817, Fabius, New York)
  • Sarah Gorton - (b. 12 Nov 1819, Fabius, New York)
  • Eleanor Gorton - (b. 3 Feb 1823, Fabius, New York)

Her death date is undetermined, but would have been after the family was established in Michigan in 1825.
