James D English was born free - to free parents, James and Delores - in St. Augustine, Spanish East Florida about 1812 to 1816. In 1833, he was taxed as a free man.
He married Mary E. Fish, daughter of Clarissa (Sanders) Fish and Jesse Fish Jr., about 1840, with several children - all born in St Augustine - resulting from this union: Emmaline English, twins Jesse Washington English and James D English, and Nelson Francis De Sales English.
The English family moved to Key West in the late 1840s - James Sr. was working as a barber in the 1850 Federal Census, Key West. He later worked in a grocery business. [1] [2] [3]
James D English passed away before November 1882, in Key West, Florida. He was buried in the Key West City Cemetery according to Cemetery records (although he does not have a grave marker). Mr. English wrote a will in 1880 [4] that was filed in November 1882 by his son James. He bequeathed four lots in Key West to his heirs. [5]
NOTE: Under Spain's rule, slaves were permitted to work for money and buy freedom for themselves and their families. See Frank Marotti's dissertation, Negotiating Freedom in St. Johns County Florida, 1812-1862.
