Mrs. Mary Clements dies of burns received week ago. Mrs. Mary Clements of 4049 Penrose Street, who stepped on a parlor match which ignited her clothing at her home a week ago, died from the results of her burns Wednesday morning.
Her husband, Joseph, who went to her aid, was severely burned about the hands. Mrs. Clements was going to the door to meet him after his return from work when the accident occurred.
The Death of Maria Esser Clements, reported by Linda Roy.
Elizabeth Rosner Lichtenberg and Agnes Rosner Bartnett said that Mary Esser died when her clothes caught fire. She panicked and ran outside, causing the flames to spread. She either died in an ambulance on the way or at City hospital. The reason that her clothes caught on fire was that her husband came home drunk late that night and demanded that she cook supper for him. He was apparently very mean and she was terrified of him. While she was rushing around, he flipped a match at her after lighting his pipe, causing her long skirt to catch on fire. The daughter, Katherine, was raised by Maria's half-sister, Katherine Drott Rosner.
