Jacob Eyers was born in Trowbridge, England on August 10, 1851.
[1]
His parents were Jonah Eyers, a weaver, and his wife Sarah (Minty) Eyers.
[2]
They moved to Trowbridge from Westbury shortly before Jacob was born,
[2]
possibly so Jonah could work in one of the city's textile mills. Jacob went on to work in the same industry.
[3]
Marriage
In 1871, Jacob married Julia Stokes of Bradford-on-Avon.
[4]
The couple lived in Trowbridge, where they had a daughter.
[5]
Immigration
Not long after the birth of his daughter, Jacob left England for North America.
[6]
Jacob's older sister Selina immigrated to Dedham, Massachusetts as early as 1871;
[7]
records
[8]
suggest he lived in Massachusetts from 1872 to 1875. From 1877 to 1879 he lived in the Portland, Maine area.
[9]
It is possible that wife Julia and newborn Nellie accompanied him to the U.S. in 1872 or they may have joined him at a later date.
By 1881, Jacob and his family had settled in southern Ontario, first living in the community of Paris
[10]
before arriving in Port Dover, a village on the shores of Lake Erie.
[11]
They had two more children while they were there.
[12][13]
Residence in California
Following Julia's death, Jacob spent considerable time with friends and relatives who had moved to California, with extended stays from the late 1920's to early 1930's.
[8][9][14]
He likely moved to California permanently in 1930, but returned to Canada shortly before his death.
Death
Jacob moved in with his son Bert in Brantford, Ontario, two weeks before he died.
[1]
He died on January 26, 1934, and was buried in Port Dover next to his wife.
