Biography

Isaac may have been born in about 1725. He was the son of Philip Ferree and Leah (Dubois) Ferree, and was mentioned in his father's 1753 will. [1]

Isaac married Elizabeth Forbis, daughter of George Forbis and his wife Olif. When George signed his will on 2 November 1768, he made provisions for his daughter Elizabeth Jones (Isaac's remarried widow), and his granddaughter Olif Free (daughter of Isaac and Elizabeth Ferree), "when she comes of age." [2]

Isaac Ferree was living in Rowan County, North Carolina, in September 1753 when he purchased land in Rowan County from Morgan Bryan Sr (or possibly his son of the same name) through Lease and Release documents. The 141-acre parcel was "on the north bank of the Yadkin River near where the road goes from thence to Dan River." [3]

On 19 September 1753, Isaac "Free" was granted a license in Rowan County "to support his ferry" and "the road already opened." He was also granted a license "to keep Publick house at his Plantation." [4]

In March 1754, Isaac Free was appointed to inspect work done on the county prison. [5]

In June 1754, Isaac Ferree, of Rowan County, sold 667 acres of land on the North Fork of Josephs Creek to Patrick Logan. The land had been granted to Isaac on 7 December 1753. [6]

Isaac "Free" was dead by 17 April 1759, when letters of administration on his estate were granted to "the Widdow Free." [7] The inventory of his estate was approved on 18 July 1759. [8] On 25 April 1761, Isaac Free's estate was distributed to Elizabeth Jones "formerly Free" and others. [9]

Court minutes from 20 January 1762 recorded that "The Marriage Articles between James Jones and Elizabeth Free [were] recorded in & proved in Open Court by the Oath of Edward Hughs one of the Evidences thereunto." The entry is scratched out without explanation. [10]

Research Notes

From Genealogical and Personal History of Western Pennsylvania: "Isaac Ferree, son of Philip and Leah (Du Bois) Ferree, married and had a son Jacob."

Isaac married his first cousin, once removed.

Opinion: It seems that Issac had at least three children at his death; Jacob, Rebecca, and Olif (Olive/Olivia). Since only Olif is mentioned in George Forbis will, it might appear that Isaac might have been married prior to Elizabeth Forbis; and Jacob and Rebecca being children from an earlier wife. It also appears from other estate settlements that Elizabeth Forbis does not die until after 1815 indicating that she may have been a great deal younger than Isaac Ferree. Another mystery to me is that the Ferree name continues to appear through the generations in the Jones family; but there does not appear to be any blood relation to a Ferree. [11]
