Gabriel Fickel is said to have been born around 1737, in Strasburg, Pennsylvania. His father, Michael Fickel, was a native of Germany, and had arrived in Pennsylvania in 1734.[1] He signed the Oath of Allegiance on the 23rd of September 1734,[1] and married Margaret Slaymaker within the next two years. Gabriel was the second of the twelve children[2] born to Michael and Margaret.
York County was created in 1749 from Lancaster County, Province of Pennsylvania.[3] Gabriel married Mary Moore, in either Lancaster or York County. Gabriel and Mary had seven children,[4]all born in York County.
In 1780 Gabriel was taxed for fifty acres of land, two horses, three cows, six sheep; all valued at $250.[5] Gabriel was listed as the head of household in Huntington Township, within York County, in 1786.[6] He had a household size of nine by the time the 1790 census was taken in York County.[4]
