Biography

Henry Arm Field son of Solomon E. Field and Celestia Josephine (Eastman) Field, was born on 6 Dec. 1871 in Page County, Iowa. He graduated from Shenandoah High School in May of 1889 and attended Western Normal College in Shenandoah, Iowa from 1889 to 1891.[1][2]

He married Annie L. Hawxby on 24 Nov. 1892.[1]

Annie died in 1899 and he married Edna Thompson, they had ten children. [1]

Henry as a highly successful grower of seeds, he incorporated his company as the Henry Field Seed Company in 1907. In addition to his seed business he was a pioneer in broadcast radio.[1]

Edna died in 1925 and he married Bertha McCullen in 1929.[1]

Henry retired as an active manager in 1938 but continued to be involved with seeds and nurserymen. In Jan. 1949 he still took the time to kindly reply to a letter from Herman W. Smith, addressing him as "Dear Friend". Herman had sold plants to Henry and was also a customer.[3][4]

Henry died on 17 Oct. 1949 at Shenandoah, Page County, Iowa[1] and was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery, Shenandoah, Page County, Iowa. His memorial has photos and links to those of family members.[2]
