Biography

Ebenezer Fitch was the son of Nathan Fitch and Hannah Huntington. He was born 22 Mar 1731 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut.[1]

Ebenezer married Lydia Fish 29 Mar 1750 in Lebanon, Connecticut.[2]

The Fitch family, transplanted from Lebanon, Conn., to King's County, are descended from Rev. James Fitch, b. at Booking, Essex, Eng., Dee. 24, 1622, who came to N, E. and was pastor for 14 years at Saybrook, Conn. He afterword removed to Norwich, where he d. in 1702. His 1st wife was Abigail, dau. of Eev. Henry Whitefield, who d. Sept. 9, 1659 ; his 2nd wife was Priscilla, dan. of Major John and Ann (Peck) Mason, b. at Windsor, Conn., in Oct., 1641. The Horton family was founded by Ebenezer Fitch, son of Nathan (Nathaniel, Rev. James) and Hannah (Huntington), who was b. at Windsor, Conn., in 1731, m. Lydia Fish, and in 1765, it is said, removed from Wallingford, Conn., to Amherst, N, S., later, however, coming to Horton.[3]

Children include:

  • Simon, b 9 Mar 1750 Lebanon, New London, Connecticut, m Bathsheba Huntington[3][4][5]
  • Cyprian, b 5 May 1753 Lebanon, New London, Connecticut, m Ruth Rand[3][4][6]
  • Ebenezer, b 29 May 1755 Lebanon, New London, Connecticut, m Abigail Bishop[3][4][7]
  • Hannah, b 13 Sep 1757 Lebanon, New London, Connecticut, m Ezra Huntington 9 Nov 1778[3][4][8]
  • Lydia, b 14 Feb 1760 Lebanon, New London, Connecticut[3][9]
  • Frederick, b 23 May 1762 Lebanon, New London, Connecticut, m1 Rachel Bishop, m2 Mary Parker, m3 unknown[3][4][10]
  • Philander, b 14 May 1764 Lebanon, New London, Connecticut, m Charles Bishop[3][4][11]

Ebenezer and his children arrived in Nova Scotia in 1765. His wife and daughter Lydia are not listed among the passengers.[4] His wife was recommended for admission to a church in Cumberland, Nova Scotia by the church in Lebanon in 1771.[12]

Ebenezer passed away 24 Jan 1777 in Cornwallis, Kings County, Nova Scotia.[13]

Research Notes

Irene Fitch is sometimes associated as their daughter. However, her birth and marriage in a different town some 40 miles from Lebanon makes it likely she was the daughter of a different Ebenezer and Lydia.

  • Irene, b 16 Jun 1771 Wallingford, New Haven, Connecticut, m Noah Shepperd 1798 Wallingford, Connecticut[3][14]

Another Ebenezer Fitch married Lydia Johnson. This other couple settled in Wallingford, Connecticut and is easily confused with our couple of Lebanon. It was our Lebanon couple who removed to Nova Scotia as shown by 1) The church referral from Lebanon to Nova Scotia for wife Lydia and 2) The names of children on the Nova Scotia immigration list whose births are recorded in Lebanon.

Another Lydia Fish married Peleg Sawdy.
