Biography

1776 Project
Private Thomas Flood served with 2nd Virginia Regiment (1777), Continental Army during the American Revolution.

Thomas was born in 1760, in Buckingham, Virginia He was the son of John Flood and Agatha Davis.

Thomas Flood served as a Private in Captain John Steed's Company, 2nd Regiment, in a Detachment of Virginia Brigade, commanded by Colonel Febiger[1]. Muster rolls show his enlistment expiring on February 29, 1780.

On 9 Jan 1787, in Isle of Wight, Virginia, he married Elizabeth Gale {abt. 1767 - d. abt. 1791; dau. of Thomas Whitney Gale & Mary Thomas). They settled in Isle of Wright where they had one child.

Elizabeth died sometime around 1791. He married again, around 1791, in North Carolina, to Judith Strother. They initially settled in North Carolina where their first child was born. Then, by 1800 they had settled in Tennessee where the other 5 children were born.

Thomas first bought land in Wilson Co., Tennessee on February 8, 1800. In 1802, he is on a list of voters, for Smith County, and by 1804, he is on the tax list for Wilson County.

Living in Wilson the remainder of his life, it is here he passed away in 1811[2]. It is unknown where he was buried.

His children Elizabeth and Robert married siblings whose parents were George Washington Mitchie and his first wife Elizabeth (surname unknown). After his 1st wife died, some researchers say the Flood siblings' mother, Judith and George were married. No source records have been found to substantiate this.

Research Notes

It appears that DAR Ancestor A039762[3] belongs to the man in this profile, except for the birth and death dates. The difference in the birth dates (1732 vs. 1760) is too large to be dismissed, and needs to be validated.
