George Forbes was born on June 14, 1760 in Great Marlborough Street, London, England., son of George Forbes (1740–1780) and Dorothea Bayly ( –1764).
George (18) married Selina Frances Rawdon (20) (born on April 9, 1759 in Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland; daughter of John Rawdon and Elizabeth (Hastings) Rawdon) on May 10, 1779 in Moira House, Dublin, Ireland. Their children were:
Eldest son and heir by his father's first wife. He was styled Viscount Forbes 1769-80 and took his seat in the Irish House of Lords 15th November 1781.
He was Governor of county Longford 1780-1831.
He served in the Army being Colonel commanding the 108th Foot 1794-5; Lieutenant-Colonel 1794, Major-General 1808, Lieutenant-General 1813, becoming finally General in 1830.
He was appointed a Privy Councillor (Ireland) 27th May 1806; Clerk of the Crown and Hanaper (Ireland) 1806-7 and 1815-1836.
Importantly he was created, 24th February 1806, 1st Baron Granard of Castle Donington, Leicestershire, in the English (or UK) Peerage, affording him the right to also sit in the House of Lords at Westminster. He was a Whig, politically.
In 1824 Castle Forbes was destroyed by fire, with most of the valuables therein, his Lordship barely escaping with his life.
George died on June 9, 1837 in Hotel Marboeuf, Champs Elysées, Paris, France, aged 76.
He was buried at Newton Forbes.[1]
