Biography

Abraham France was born on 22 October 1821, probably in Ohio. He was the son of Abraham France and Mary Starns.[1] (See also, Research Notes.)

On 19 October 1848, Abraham France married Catharine Lenhart in Tuscarawas County, Ohio.[2]

In the 1850 census Abraham (age 28) and his wife Catherine (age 26) were living in Wayne Township, Tuscarawas, Ohio. Their household also included a baby, John H. France (age 6/12) and John Lanehart (laborer, age 16), who may have been his brother-in-law, or another of his wife's relatives. Abraham's occupation was listed as farmer.[3]

In the 1860 census Abram (age 34), Farmer, was in Hudson, LaPorte, Indiana.[4]

By 1870, Abraham (age 51) and his wife Catherine (age 46) and their expanded family were living in Hudson Township, LaPorte, Indiana. Their household included:

  • George W. (age 18)
  • Flora L. (age 15)
  • Mariett (age 13)
  • Charles (age 11)
  • Lucretia (age 4)
  • Ethelbert (age 1)

The occupations for Abraham and George were given as farmer. [5]

In the 1880 census Abram (age 58), farmer, was the married head of household in Galien, Berrien, Michigan.[6]

In the 1900 census Abraham (age 79) was the married head of household in Galien, Galien Township, Berrien, Michigan.[7]

Abraham France died (age 88) on 4 July 1910 in New Carlisle, St Joseph, Indiana.[1]

He was buried in New Carlisle Cemetery, New Carlisle, St. Joseph, Indiana. [8]

Research Notes

  • Abraham's death record lists his parents as Abraham France and Mary Starns. France family trees on Ancestry identify an Adam France Jr. married to a Mary Sterns. More research is needed to sort out this discrepancy. Kimbel-162 22:58, 19 March 2024 (UTC)
