National Archives - Southwest Division, Fort Worth, Texas. Martha Jones; et al and A.A. Spring, et al. Life Sketch
Betsy's appearance was described in her step-son's testimony before the Dawes Commission on 6 June 1904 as a "...tolerable large woman; very dark skin; very dark eyes and black hair" who lived in Rankin County, Mississippi. Her brothers were "Henry, William, Jim, Allen, and Thompson; Thompson died when he was a young man and Raff." Another place in the testimony, William calls her son Thomas, not Thompson.
The testimony says the witness, William Fountain Morris, born 1826 in Louisiana, was the son of Whit W. Morris and Sarah Richardson; and through his father (by way of Betsy), he was half brother to Henry and Louisa Morris, the children of Elizabeth Franklin.
In the testimony, William claimed that Elizabeth Franklin ("Betsy" Franklin) was married to his father Whit Wall Morris before his mother Sarah "Sallie" Richardson married him. He did not know where they were married, but he did know that they separated, and Betsy married again to a man named "Allen."
After the separation, Betsy lived with her two children, Henry and Louisa, in Rankin County, Mississippi. William recounted that Betsy also had children with "Allen," the oldest one Thomas Jefferson "Jeff" (in another place he is called Jefferson). He didn't know the names of her other children but believed she had three Allen children..
Betsy's son, Henry Morris, was married in Mississippi and living in Louisiana, east of Shreveport before the war. He was killed in 1863 by some "jay hawkers" during the war.
Betsy's daughter Louisa (Morris) Boone had children named Elizabeth (Mrs. Dobson), Martha (Mrs. Jones), William (died in Henrietta, Texas), John (living in Texas), Mary Ann (died in Texas), Adeline (lives in Chickasaha, Barefoot 1st husband Branson 2nd husband, ), and Sallie. She died "about 12 or 13 years ago [1891-1892].
