Arthur Joseph Fredette was born on 3 February 1897, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was the second son of Paul Alfred Fredette (1869-1933) and Corinda Alma (Marois) Fredette (1871-1944).

On 4 June 1918 , Private First Class Arthur J. Fredette enlisted in World War I, and was discharged 15 July 1919. He served in the Quartermaster Corps at Fort Devens in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. During World War I Camp Devens processed more than 100,000 selectees into the Army, and as a demobilization center, processed more than 150,000 men out of the Army.[3]

On 24 November 1919, in Fitchburg, Arthur married Albertine Bernatchez, daughter of Alphonse Bernatchez and Obeline Dube.[4]
