Biography

Notables Project
Elizabeth Freke is Notable.

Elizabeth was born on 1 Jan 1641 in Westminster, Middlesex. [1]She was the oldest daughter of Raufe Freke, a London lawyer, and Cicely Culpeper. She was only seven years old when her mother died and, along with her younger sisters, she was raised by her mother's sister Frances who moved into the family home. [2]

On 14 Nov 1672, at St Paul, Covent Garden, London, she secretly married Percy Freke of Rathbury Castle, County Cork, who was her second cousin.[3] They also had a more public wedding ceremony on 26 June 1673 at St Margaret's Westminster. [4] They had one son, Ralph, born on 02 June 1675.

Elizabeth's marriage to the largely absent and financially feckless Percy, was clearly a great source of trial to her, of which she writes in great detail. The dissatisfaction, disagreements and disappointments of Elizabeth's life form the primary theme of her diary entries and other memoranda which have been collected in the book Remembrances of Elizabeth Freke 1641-1714. [5][6]

Towards the end of her life Elizabeth described herself as a "diseased criple with a rhumatisme and tisick confined to a chair for this eighteen months past" and at the mercy of her servants and neighbours. [7]

Elizabeth died on about 7 April 1714 and was buried in Westminster Abbey on 12 April 1714. The burial register says that she was buried "in the body of the Abbey". [8] Her monument in the Abbey, which she shares with two of her sisters, is inscribed "Near this place lyes all that is mortal of ELIZABETH and JUDITH daughters of RALPH FREKE of Hannington in Wiltshire, Esq. by CECILIA his wife, daughter of Sir THOMAS COLEPEPER of Hollingbourn in Kent. ELIZABETH was marry’d to PIERCY FREKE, of West Bilney in Norfolk Esq, and was ye mother of Sir RALPH FREKE Bart. deceased, the father of a flowrishing posterity there. She was of excellent life, frugal to be munificent, a lively Christian pattern of charity & self-denial. She dyed Aprill 7th 1714 aged 69 years." [9]
