John was born 7 February 1790, and was baptised 6 March 1790 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Lunenburg.. He was the son of John Gaetz and Maria Eleanora Heiner.[1]
John was married twice. He married in 1813[2] to his first wife was Anna Barbara Wolfe, daughter of Johannes Wolfe and Maria Elizabeth Leslie. She was born 19 Jun 1793 in Lunenburg..[3]
Their child, John Martin Gates, was born 8 November 1814, in Dartmouth, Halifax, Nova Scotia. John's wife Anna died soon after.
John next married Ann Catherine Conrad, daughter of Johann Lorentz Conrad and Elizabeth Himmelman, in 1815, in Halifax, Nova Scotia.[4]
