Biography

Penelope was born about 1782. She passed away in 1836.

An alternate birthdate for Nellie Gaines or Granger Aldrich is 15 Sep 1782, calculated from the gravestone in Troy, IN that she shares with Simeon Aldrich Sr. and his second wife, Lucy Jackman (see attached photo).

Her first name is certain based on the gravestone and the obituary of their daughter, Emily Philena Aldrich Tubbs and her last name seems most likely to be Gaines based on the MA death record of daughter Emily along with the 2 additional marriages of sisters of Nellie Gaines of MA to brothers of Simeon Aldrich (Sr) of Guilford, VT. However, daughter Emily's MA death record says that her mother unnamed "Gaines" was born in Guilford, VT but that record could have been filled out by someone who did not know her birth location since they obviously did not even know her first name.

Penelope Gaines is being added as Simeon's wife since 2 of Simeon's brothers married 2 sisters of the Nellie Gaines of Greenfield, MA who was born there 30 Apr 1782 to David Gaines and Elizabeth Tubbs. More research is definitely needed.

Simeon and Nellie had 3 known children - Simeon Jr (born 1804), Isaac Terry (born 1807) and Emily Philena (1809-1896), all born in Guilford. Simeon and 2nd wife Lucy are not known to have had children. Their Guilford wedding record lists her as "Mrs. Lucy Jackman" so possibly her maiden name was something else. It also lists Simeon's residence as Indiana, confirming the story that he had already moved there and was on a temporary return trip to VT.
