Biography

Marcus Gallagher has Irish ancestors.
This profile is part of the Gallagher Name Study.

Marcus was born on 22 February 1870 at Deep Creek, Gympie, Queensland, Australia, the first and eldest child of Thomas Gallagher and Susan Collisson. [1]

After his mother's passing in April 1882, his four brothers and sister migrated with father Thomas to New Zealand some time between August 1882 (father no longer on electoral roll) and 1885 (Gallagher Family Book), however Marcus remained in Gympie, Queensland, Australia, living with his maternal grandparents, the Collissons, in order to complete his education.

He commenced his career as a civil servant in 1886 in the Gympie Post Office.

Subsequently he served as a clerk in the Court of Petty sessions at Innisfail and then Charleville.

He married Margaret Heffernan on 26 February 1895 in Charleville, Queensland, Australia. [2]

They had 9 children together;

  1. Unnamed (passed very shortly after birthing, Charleville, Queensland)
  2. Marcus Leonard Cleaton (possibly Clayton after his father mother's mother maiden surname)
  3. Robert James
  4. John Salisbury
  5. Horace Robert
  6. Warwick Joseph
  7. Grosvenor Stanton
  8. Clive Edward
  9. Harry

Sadly, their first son (unnamed) passed at birth in Charleville, and son Grosvenor passed suddenly and unexpectedly at age 20 from Bright's disease in Mackay. Their last two children (Clive and Harry) were twins.

Margaret accompanied Marcus in his postings and travels, with their children being born at a number of locations around inland and coastal Queensland.

In his working career Marcus was employed for over 55 years by the Queensland Government as a public servant, initially as a post office worker at Gympie from 1886, and subsequently as a Clerk of the Court of Petty Sessions (C.P.S), then progressing (appointed to the bench 1912) as Police Magistrate (P.M.) then Stipendary Magistrate (S.M.), having held postings all over Queensland including Gladstone, Warwick, Townsville, Geraldton, Innisfail, Hughenden, Charleville, Mackay, and Toowoomba.

He retired in Brisbane, renting a suite of rooms at "Kingsley", a private hotel at 28 George Street in Brisbane CBD (corner of George and Margaret streets).

At the time of his mother-in-law Margaret's passing in August 1909, he was living at Stanton Hills, Townsville, Queensland, Australia.

His wife Margaret passed away on 31 July 1950 at Kingsley Private Hotel, 28 George Street, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. She was buried on 2 August 1950 at South Brisbane Cemetery, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

Marcus passed away on 12 September 1950 at his son Warwick's home in Billyana Street, Balmoral, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. [3]

He was buried on 15 September 1950 at South Brisbane Cemetery, Dutton Park, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia with his wife Margaret and next to sons Marcus and Warwick. [4] [5]

One of the most representative gatherings of the town and district took place at the Town Hall, the big hall being well filled, to say good-bye over a glass of wine to Mr Gallagher, who has been eight years our worthy Police Magistrate, on his leaving for Charleville to act as Police Magistrate there (says Hughenden "Observer.") The Mayor occupied the Chair, and in eulogising the guest, said that no one could more faithfully and impartially carried out the many duties and offices under his charge than Mr. Gallagher had done. Tho town and country were exceedingly sorry to lose, him, and as a small token of the respect and esteem in which he was held, he had much pleasure in presenting him with a purse of sovereigns, which had, gladly and willingly been subscribed to show their appreciation. Messrs Blackall, Harrop, Ferguson, Price, Byers, Byrne, Hamilton, and Suter spoke, all in terms of regret at losing Mr Gallagher, who in responding said that the time he spent in the West, was the best in his life. He had tried to do his duty impartially, but was surprised at this handsome present as he had not expected any such kindness. The singing of "God Save The King" brought a very pleasant evening to a close.

Research Note - Kingsley Private Hotel

In 1867, the Menzies Private Hotel was established at 28 George Street (corner of Margaret Street and adjacent to the Queensland Club). It was refurbished and re-opened as the Kingsley Private Hotel in July 1922. It has since been demolished. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Street,_Brisbane

1 Hodgson's Terrace, George Street, Brisbane Thomas Lodge Murray-Prior and Matilda's next home in Brisbane was designed by and rented from prominent architect James Cowlishaw and was at Hodgson's Terrace, George Street. Cowlishaw had designed it as a terrace of 5 two-story houses; Matilda and TLM-P lived at no. 1. Their son Lodge was born there in 1863. Given that he died when three weeks old, he probably died there too. The building had various uses including as Kingsley Private Hotel until it was demolished in 1979. https://murray-prior.org/mpwiki/doku.php?id=brisbane_properties_and_other_land_dealings#fnt__2

About Errol Walter James Noble (Eulogy of Errol Walter James Noble) How difficult is it to cover an 83 year lifespan in a few paragraphs? VERY. Errol first saw the light of day in a Murwillumbah hospital in August 1924. His parents , Walter and Pearl Noble had a dairy farm in the small village of Newrybar, between Bangalow and Ballina in the Northern Rivers area of NSW. This farm is the original farm settled by Errol's grandfather almost 80 years earlier. Errol's early years were spent running around the farm, making canoes out of kerosene tins, perhaps helping with the milking, attending the Newrybar State School and surely having a good time with his mates. Some of Pearls family had moved from the Bangalow district to Brisbane, and established businesses, so Walter and Pearl and the two lads Barrie had come along 9 years after Errol, headed for the big city. There they ran a boarding house at West End, and Errol continued his education at the West End State School. Later the family took over the lease of the Kingsley Private Hotel in George Street, opposite the old Belle Vue Hotel in the late 1930s, both now demolished, https://www.geni.com/people/Errol-Noble/6000000001485851556
