Biography

John Galloway was born circa 1700. John worked as an indentured apprentice to a New York City ropemaker in New York City. John's indenture was registered on 13 March 1715, and was established to run for 15 years--until 1730. [1]

An indenture dated 9 June 1719 was made with Peter Colvell for the sum of 20 pounds paid by Mr. Willliam Dugdale and Mr. John Searle of the city of New York, "Reapers the Receipt whereof he doth hereby acknowledge by and with the Consent and good liking of John Gallaway theapprentice within named hath assigned and sett over unto the said William Dugdale and John Searle and the survivor of them all and Every the Term of years Service and Term of Apprenticeship of the said John Gallaway now to come and unexpired of the said Term of Eleven years and three Months for which he hath bond himself apprentice unto the said Peter Colvell," ...."the said John Gallaway the Apprentice within Mentioned doth hereby consent to serve out all the Rest of the said Term" ...."and the said William Dugdale and John Searle" ... "promise and Grant to teach and Instruct or Cause to be taught and Instructed the said John Gallaway the Apprentice the Art or Mystery of a Reaper" [Roper?] "which they now use after the best Manner that they now know or hereafter shall know during the Residue of the said term." ... and also shall find and Provide unto the said John Gallaway the Apprentice sufficient Meat, Drink, apparel, Lodging and washing, whatsoever fitt for such and Apprentice" ..."Document sealed by Peter Covell and John Gallaway signed with his mark. Recorded 29 June 1719."[2]

John Galloway's estate was valued at 10 pounds in NYC tax assessment of Feb 1730. He became a freeman in 1734, describing himselfas a ropemaker.

John Galloway married Annatie (Hannah) Lam(b) on 7 Aug 1727. They had a son, John Galloway.
