James was born in Cannon County, Tennessee, on January 7, 1854, to Samuel Gannon and Susannah Stacy.[1][2] He married first Tennessee "Tennie" Brooks, daughter of John Brooks and Martha Wimberley, on October 12, 1873. They had two known children:
1874-1953: Rice Sewell,[3] m. Mary Jane Clark, 1910
1877-1947: Emma Thomas,[4] m. Richard Holloway, 1906
Tennie died of consumption in June 1879.[5] James remarried on July 9, 1880 to Julie Ann Williams, daughter of Melchizedek and Jane Williams, and widow of Tennie's brother, William Brooks.[6] They are not known to have had any more children.[7]
James died on April 28, 1922, in Rutherford, Tennessee.[8] He is recorded as a widower, so Julie predeceased him, but her date of death is not known. At least one family researcher reports her death as 1913. His death certificate states that he was buried at Walden Cemetery.
