Abele was a blacksmith by trade. He was 5 feet and 7 inches tall, with light brown hair and blue eyes. He never belonged to any religious sect, although he was a good moral man.
U. S. military records show that Able Gardner enlisted numerous times in the Continental and U. S. armies to help support his family. He enlisted from Abington, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.
Abel was a revolutionary soldier. He enlisted in the army on July 13, 1781 when fifteen years of age. He was in Captain Zebulon King's Company, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel John Brooks of the 7th regiment. He served seven years, until peace was declared.
He was a veteran of the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.
He was in the Patriot war, in 1813-14.
They were poor and subsisted on what was produced on their small, rocky farm in southern New Hampshire.
29 April 1840, He died suddenly in his room at the age of 77.
