Biography

Mary was born in the Montana Territory of the United States in 1869 to father Baptiste Gariepy and mother Julia Cardinal. Her father was Metis, born in Winnipeg, Canada and her mother was Metis, born in Montana Territory. Their primary language was French. In 1880 she was living with her family who were ranching on the north bank of the Upper Teton River in the County of Choteau, Montana Territory, United States.[1][2]

She was married to Vital Emard in Montana in 1885[3] and they moved north to Canada where they homesteaded in Grouard, Peace River, North West Territories.[4][5]

They raised at least seven children together, Auguste Emard,[6] Mary Emard,[7] Josephine Emard,[8]Frank Emard, Jeremy Emard, and Edward Emard. At least two children died in infancy.

In the 1911 Census her husband Vital Emard is listed as a widower.[9] Mary therefore died before this census was taken.
