Biography
James was born in 1789, the son of Thomas Gaston and Sarah Nichols. He married Mary “Polly” Powers about 1810 and they had six known children together:
James served in the War of 1812, initially as a Sergeant in the 3rd Reg’t (Alston’s) South Carolina Militia, one of the first units in the war. He enlisted 1 Oct 1814 as Sergeant in 1st Reg’t, South Carolina Militia, Capt Manly Ford’s Company, Hugh Mean’s Reg’t, Moore’s Brigade. Discharged 12 Mar 1815.
He was a slave holder, varying in number from one person counted in 1840 and as many as eight people held by him in 1860.
