MARY RESH, Obituary

Mary Resh died peacefully of lung cancer on Oct.19, 2013. She was 81 years old. Mary will be missed by her husband, Fred, their son, Ky, her grandchildren, Chelsea and Peter, her brother, Nicholas George, and her nephew, Nicholas George Rodriguez and his family. Mary was born in San Francisco, California, on Feb. 25, 1932, daughter of Marguerite Hunsinger and Nick George. Mary's mother died suddenly when Mary was only 11 years old. Her middle brother, Benjamin Washington George, died unexpectedly in a boating accident when he was an adolescent. She then grew up with her father and older brother, Nicholas. Given her Greek immigrant father's intense connection to his family in Cephalonia and his devotion to raising Mary and her brother, Nicholas, Mary centered her life on two related themes. She was devoted to family and friends, especially when there was a need to fill, and she was also tireless in her commitment to a rich life of the mind. Mary's father's influence was evident in Mary's enjoyment of Greek cooking, Greek history, Greek art, and family. After attending San Francisco public schools and San Francisco State College, Mary taught elementary school in California for nine years. Mary valued the excellence of her public education and was determined to provide good experiences for others. Friends who knew her later would comment that she had a clear, direct style that resulted in children both loving and obeying her. Even after she stopped teaching, her love of children was evident in the way she spoke to them without condescension and her closeness to the children of her friends. Following her nine years of teaching in California, Mary decided to study for a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Colorado. During her graduate studies, she attended a workshop led by the famous psychologist, Carl Rogers, where she met dear partner Fred. Mary and Fred were married 45 years. During her training, Mary worked as a psychologist at National Jewish Hospital, then the Denver Veterans Administration Hospital. She was also a psychologist in the Boulder Valley Public Schools and at the Boulder County Mental Health Center before beginning the private practice of psychology. She practiced in Boulder for over 20 years, and considered it a privilege and a joy to work with her clients. Mary's professional interests were shaped by her deep sensitivity to the plight of those less fortunate, both with respect to material and psychological resources. In Denver, she helped to open a halfway house for mentally ill veterans who were well enough to be discharged from hospitalization sponsored by Disabled American Veterans. In Boulder, through the Boulder County Mental Health Center, she helped open a halfway house on Floral Drive, and also facilitated the move of the Boulder County Homeless Shelter to its present location. Mary and Fred were enthusiastic patrons of the arts. Mary also loved gardening and gardens, eccentric and whimsical art, bargains, jokes on- and off-color, and was a gifted conversationalist. She supported causes of those who especially needed advocacy by those more fortunate. She entertained generously with respect to gathering diverse yet beloved friends together for good meals and good conversation in her home. Mary's keen intellect and generous heart will be missed by her many friends and her family. In lieu of donations, Mary wants you to buy yourself some flowers.
