Ashley married Ivy Myrtle Rogers in 1920. Their children were:
- Mavis Myrtle Gibbs (1920–1999)
- Darcy Campbell Gibbs (1923–1998)
- Eric Samuel Gibbs (1925–1957)
Ashley died on 9 March 1956 in Stratford, New Zealand, aged 69. He was buried in Kopuatama Cemetery, Stratford, Stratford District, Taranaki, New Zealand (plot: Block 60A Plot 25).
