Sarah Gilbert was christened in Derby, Derbyshire on 11 October 1835[1]. She was the daughter of William Gilbert and his wife Ellen.
At the time of the 1841 England and Wales Census, William, Ellen, Lydia, William, Sarah, Joseph, and Henry Gilbert were listed as living on Malt Sitwell Street in St Peter, Derbyshire, along with Susan Gilbert, who may have been William's sister[2].
At the time of the 1861 England and Wales Census, William, Ellen, William, Sarah, Joseph, Henry, John, and Edwd Gilbert were listed as living on Malt House Row in St Peter, Derbyshire, along with a visitor[3]. At the time of the census, Sarah's occupation was listed as "Bobbin Winder".
