Biography

This profile is part of the Gilbert Name Study.

Asa Gilbert was a farmer, residing at New Hartford and Barkhamsted. His father gave him a house and some land in New Hartford, but he removed to Barkhamsted about 1792, or perhaps as late as 1806, for his children from Erastus 2nd to Eliza, inclusive, were baptized at New Hartford. The distance he removed may not have been great, as Barkhamsted adjoins New Hartford on the northeast.

Asa Gilbert was a Private in the Lexington Alarm Company that marched from New Hartford in April, 1775. [Conn. Men in the Revolution, p. 177]. He is probably the Asa Gilbert who served in the 18th Regiment, Connecticut State Troops, Lieut. Thomas Bidwell's Company, from Aug. 19 to Sept. 24, 1776. Perhaps some or all of the following service record was his also. Connecticut State Troops, 1776, Third Battalion, Wadsworth's Brigade, Col. Comfort Sage, Capt. Joseph Churchill's Company, at New York City and on Long Island; caught in the retreat Sept. 15; at battle of White Plains, Oct. 28, 1776; time expired Dec. 25, 1776 [Conn. Men in the Revolution, pg. 402; Also Gen. Erastus Wolcott's Brigade, Capt. Jared Shepard's Company, at Peekskill, from Mar. 31 to May 19, 1777 [Conn. Men in the Revolution, pg. 496]. He probably had a pension under the Act of 1818. His widow Mary received a pension in 1840, aged 74. [U.S. Pension File, W 17944; Conn. Men in the Revolution, p. 663; D.A.R. Lineage Books, vol 16, pp. 22-3; vol. 23, pp. 185-6; vol. 25, p. 13.] [1]
