Biography

Walter was born in 1876. He is the son of Jerome Gill and Mary Scanlan.

The family lived on Chapel Street when Walter was baptized on 17 Dec 1876 at Saint Senan's in Killaloe. Sponsors were Martin and Bridget Scanlan. A notation over their names reads 'married in St. Sionerick to.  ? O'Meara, C.C. performed the service. [1]

In the 1901 census, Mary Gill was a Shopkeeper, living at house 77 on Moore Street, Kilrush Urban, Clare. Everyone in the household was Catholic and could read and write.[1]

Present were: Mary Gill, aged 61, a widow, in "General Business"
also present were her children,
May, aged 25, General Business, not married
Walter, aged 24, Farming, not married
Teresa, aged 22, General Business, not married
Jerome, aged 19, Carpenter, not married
also present were 3 Boarders (Nellie O'Farrell, Margaret Cranny, John Deherty) and a Servant (Bridget Fortune). All not married.
Mary Gill signed Form B.

Lawrence Gill, aged 17, was recorded as a pupil at Blackrock College, Dublin.

In 1911, Mary Gill was aged 72, widowed, and appears to be retired.

With her were,
Walter, aged 32, a Jockey, married.
Jeremiah, aged 30, a Carpenter, single.
Lawrence, aged 25, a General Dealer, single.
also present was a 20-year-old servant, Mary Cooper, single.
the family lived at 73 Moore Street, Kilrush Urban, Clare.
