Private Elias Gillaspie died of typhoid on parole as a POW during the US Civil War.

Elias C. Gillaspie was born about 1842 in either Clay, Indiana, or Livingston, Missouri, United States, son of John Fleshman Gillaspie and Mary (Owen) Gillaspie.[1]

Elias enlisted as a Private in Company "K" of the 23rd Missouri Infantry on 22 December 1861 at Chillicoth. A notation on his service record states that he was wounded in action at Shiloh on 6 April 1862 and captured.[2] He was paroled on 28 May 1862 in Montgomery, Alabama. He was taken with typhoid and sent to the hospital in Cairo, Alexander, Illinois, where he died on 10 July 1862.[3]
