Biography

Jesse was born in about 1789 in Buckingham County, VA. He was the son of Richard Gilliam and Judith Stidham

Jesse's wife if often given as Elizabeth McCoy; however, the death certificates of Jesse's children list their mother as Elizabeth Fields and in fact, their first born is named Ansel Fields Gilliam.

Military

Jesse served in the War of 1812. He enlisted 16 Oct 1813 and was discharged 10 Mar 1814.[1]

1850 Census

Jesse Gillam appears in the 1850 United States Federal Census as a sixty-one-year-old illiterate farmer with no real property, living with his wife, Elizabeth, also illiterate, and their seven children, six sons and one daughter, all of whom are shown as able to read and write.
