Biography

John Glazier was born in 1755 and it is believed that his place of birth was Glasgow, Scotland. He was in central South Carolina by the time America declared iuts independance from England. As mentioned below, John was active in the militia. He served under Colonel Thomas Taylor in the Camden District Regiment in Sumter's Militia. In 1782 John was married to l Elizabeth Edwards and began their large family. John Glazier died in 1831 in Fairfield, South Carolina, a well respected man in his church and community (see grave marker inscription).

John Glazier's tombstone inscription:

SACRED to the memory of Capt. JOHN GLAZIER who died at his residence in Fairfield District December 4th, 1831, in the 76th year of his age. Numerous relations and friends expressing the deepest regret on the death of this Venerable Citizen are consoled in recollecting that as a man he was truly just and honourable, as a Christian exemplary, and as a Patriot Soldier, worthy of grateful esteem. Posterity will remember that he was in active service thro' the Revolutionary War, was united in the front ranks with his Countrymen at the brilliant transactions at Stono and Eutaw -- that he aided in the marches of Liberty and Social order. An aged widow, and grateful children, grandchildren, and friends affectionately consecrate this marble to his memory.
