Biography

Charles Frederick Gledhill (Fred) was born on 13 November 1916 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England.[1] He was the only child of Charles Gledhill and Laura Metcalf Gledhill. He was baptized on 8 December, 1916 at St. Mary and All Saints church, known as the church with the crooked spire, in Chesterfield.[2] As a child he was sickly and spent a lot of time at a farm in Youlgrave, Derbyshire where there was fresh air and good food. He had an amblyopic or lazy eye, like his mother, and was blind in this one eye.

Fred attended Chesterfield Technical College to study Electrical Engineering. His first job was the Work's Manager's Clerk and Typist, Plowright Colliery and General Engineering, on Chatsworth Road, Chesterfield as noted in the 1939 Register.

During World War II Fred was a dispatch rider delivering dispatches all over England by motorbike. During this time he met Eileen Marie Gollin and they were married in St Peter and St Paul Church, Old Brampton, Chesterfield on 7 June 1944.[3] They settled down to live in the house his father had built for his mother at 31 Westbrook Drive, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. His father was alive at this time but died shortly after the birth of their daughter in 1947.

Fred worked for the Needham Engineering Company later known as Brown Brothers Electrical Engineering Company in Sheffield. He retired in 1982 from Allan Eyre and Co at Sheepbridge Industrial Estate, Chesterfield. Following his retirement he assisted his wife Eileen in her catering company.

He immigrated to Alberta, Canada with his wife Eileen in the fall of 1989 in order to be close to his only child Isabelle. He enjoyed traveling in England and Scotland, Europe and Western Canada. He visited Canada four times prior to immigrating. He was particularly interested in wildlife, cars and aviation. He was a gentle man, a loving husband and father.[4]

He passed away in Sherwood Park, Alberta of cancer at the age of 81 in 1997.[5][6][7]
