David Orlando Goudie was born on December 13, 1887 in Puslinch, Wellington, Ontario, Canada, son of David W. Goudie (1848–1918) and Maria Sarah Holm (1851–1893)[1]. HIs parents were Mennonite farmers[2].
David's mother passed away when he was six[3]. The following year, his father married a widow, Martha (Pike) Reesor (1841-1923) who was not a Mennonite[4]. At some point, his father left farming to work as a grocer and in the 1901 Census the family was living in Toronto Township in what is now Mississauga[5].
In 1909 David left Canada to settle in Detroit, Michigan with one of his Pannabaker cousins[6][7][8].
When he registered for the draft in 1917, he was described on of medium height, stout with brown hair and eyes. He had started the process of becoming a United States citizen by filing his declaration of intent.[10]. He would become a citizen the following year[11].
When David came to Detroit, he started out as a clerk, but worked his way up first to salesman and at the time of his death he was District Sales Manager for his company[12][13].
David died on March 11, 1948 in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, United States, aged 59[14]. He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan.[15]
