Biography

James Gould, Jr. was born on December 18, 1765 at Groton Township, Grafton County, New Hampshire. James Gould is the son of James Gould and Mary Lovejoy.[1]

James marries to Sophia Payne on July 21, 1791 at St. George, Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Sophia Payne was born on June 13, 1776 at Lebanon, Connecticut, USA. Sophia is the daughter of John Payne and Lydia Tisdale.

James Gould Jr. served with 1st New Hampshire Regiment (1777), Continental Army during the American Revolution.

James Gould served in the First New Hampshire Regiment as a "Waiter" to his father, Lieutenant James Gould. James Gould was wounded and hospitalized for four months in Albany, NY. His son brought him back to New Hampshire on a stretcher.[2]

James Gould died 17 April 1843 in New Hampshire. This is listed on the Final Payment Voucher Received from the General Accounting Office of General Services Administration; the Agency of Payment was Concord, New Hampshire.[3]

  1. Susanah Gold was Christened on May 16, 1793 at St. George, Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
  2. Ann Gold was Christened on August 27, 1797 at St. George, Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
  3. William Gould was Christened on September 10, 1798 at St. George, Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
  4. Sophiah Gold was Christened on June 9, 1803 at St. George, Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

The 1818 Census for Little Baddeck, Nova Scotia, records James Gould/Goold, a "Joyner" (carpenter), who is fit, and has take the "Oath of Allegiance". His son William Gould, aged 24, married, lives in the adjoining residence. His son-in-law James Boutelier also is listed, living nearbye. James Gould's daughter Susannah had married James Boutelier, and James's son William had married Sophia Boutelier; brother and sister had married brother and sister.

By November 20, 1821, James Gould filed for a pension in Grafton County, New Hampshire.
