Biography

The records for Charles Granville Graham, son of Thomas Graham (1868-1947) and Zula Mae Blake (1872-1945), are confused. After his 1921 graduation from high school in Ardmore, OK, the next record found is a 1931 certificate for the birth of Charlotte Granville Graham in Dallas, TX, to Charles Granville Graham and Mabel Dyer, on which Mabel is listed as housewife living at the same address as Charles. Charles is listed in city directories as living with wife Mabel in Oklahoma City, OK, in 1933 and Ardmore, OK, in 1935, although no record of their prior marriage has been found. They are recorded as having divorced in Oklahoma on 4 Apr 1939 and having applied for a marriage license in August of the same year. Chas G. Graham is listed as living with wife Mabel in 1941 in an Oklahoma City directory and he lists Mabel living at his address as source of information about him on his 1942 WWII draft card. That is the last record found for him.

Records found for Mabel Dyer indicate that she was born in 1903 in Oklahoma, lived with her parents in Carter, OK, in 1910 and Ardmore, OK, in 1920, and was single and living and teaching school in Oklahoma City in 1930. Blake-Graham family knowledge says that Charlotte Graham’s parents divorced and that she remained with her mother, with no further contact with Charles. Charlotte’s obituary indicates that her parents were Charles and Peggy Graham, that her mother was a teacher, and that Charlotte married and raised two children, lost her first husband and remarried, having lived since childhood in Oklahoma City. No confident record has been found for Mabel after Charles’ 1942 draft card, although she probably remained in Oklahoma City at least until Charlotte graduated from high school there in 1949, and probably until Charlotte’s graduation from Oklahoma University in 1954.

Charles Granville Graham 1903: b. 10 Apr to Thomas Graham (1868-1947) and Zula Mae Blake (1872-1945) in Ardmore, OK (WWII draft card dated 14 Feb 1942; 1910 US Census for Thomas Graham, Duncan Ward 3, Stephens, OK) 1906: Application by Zula Blake Graham for enrollment of her son Charles Granville Graham as a Choctaw minor; refused 22 Nov 1906 (Dawes Census Card 1144). 1921: Graduated from Ardmore High School (Ardmore High School Yearbook, The Criterion, p. 35) 1931: birth certificate for Charlotte Granville Graham, b. 23 Aug 1931, Baylor Hospital, Dallas Texas, to Charles Granville Graham (b. OK, occupation Oil Leases) living at 1512 Fitzhugh, and Mabel Dyer (b. Oklahoma, housewife), living at same address. From Charlotte’s 2018 Obituary (The Oklahoman, 14 Oct 2018) b. 23 Aug 1931, in Ardmore, OK, only child of Charles and Peggy “Mur” Graham. Her mother had been a school teacher. Confident Graham-Blake family knowledge indicates that Charlotte knew her father was Charles Granville Graham, that her parents had divorced, and that Charlotte remained with her mother and had no further contact with her father. The family knew little of Charlotte’s mother, and her birth in Texas comes as a surprise.

Mabel Dyer: 1910: Mable Dyer, age 7, b. OK, listed in1910 US Census living with James R. Dyer (age 30, b. Texas) and his wife Lizzie (age 25) in Carter, OK. James and Lizzie married in Carter, and were living there in 1910, which implies that Mabel was b. in Carter OK. 1920: Mabel A. Dyer, age 17, b. 1903 in OK, listed in 1920 US Census living in Ardmore, Carter County, OK, with her mother Elizabeth Dyer (age 33) and Elizabeth’s parents Samuel P. and Annie Winston. 1930: Mabel Dyer, age 27 and single, b. 1903 in OK, listed in 1930 US Census living in Oklahoma City, OK, renting a house a1125t No Lee, teaching in public school; housing two nurses as “roomers”. 1930: Mabel’s mother Elizabeth Dyer, age 43, is listed in the 1930 US Census as living in Ardmore, OK, with her mother Annie Winston (age 66) and three other Winston relatives. [This entry to indicate that Mabel’s presence in Texas ter Charlotte was not because she went there to be with her mother Elizabeth for the birth of her first child.] 1949, 1954: Graduation of daughter Charlotte from Classen High School in Oklahoma City and from University of Oklahoma, where in the 1953 yearbook she is listed to be from Oklahoma City, implying that Mabel made her home there through that period.

1933: Charles G. Graham listed as living in Oklahoma City, OK at 514 NW 24th, apt 7, with wife Mabel D. Graham (Polk’s Oklahoma City Directory, 1933, p. 267) 1935: Charles G. Graham listed as living in Ardmore, OK, at 807 E. Main with wife Mabel (Polk’s Ardmore City Directory 1935, p. 108). 1939: 4 Apr, Divorce of C. Graham and Mable Graham, both living at 529 NW 32nd (Oklahoma City?), Oklahoma County, OK (Oklahoma County, OK, Marriage Records, p. 232). It’s possible this marriage did not take place, as have not been able to find a record if it. 1941: Chas G. Graham listed as living 133 NW 30th apt 6 with wife Mabel (Polk’s Oklahoma City Directory, 1941, p. 269) 1942: 14 Feb WWII draft card for Charles Granville Graham, b. 10 Apr 1903, Ardmore, OK, living at 608 NW 28, Oklahoma City OK, cites person knowing his address to be Mrs. Mabel Graham, living at same address.
