Ronald was born in 1922. He was the son of storekeeper Ronald Grainer and amateur pianist Margaret Clark.
He grew up in a remote mining community.
He enrolled at the University of Queensland in 1939 to study civil engineering and music.
He joined the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in December 1940 and was sent to Amberley, Queensland, posted to 73 Signals.
On 17 September 1952 at the Presbyterian manse, Norman Park, he married Marjorie "Margot" Boyce (White) Adolphus and became stepfather to her daughter Rel. They emigrated to England after their marriage. Eventually he began to receive commissions for his music, mostly for television shows. His breakthrough was the theme to the detective show Maigret Two of his most memorable compositions were the themes to Doctor Who (his only composition where another person - Delia Derbyshire of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop - brought their own performance interpretation) and to Tales of the Unexpected.
He and Margot later divorced.
He married actress Jennifer Dodds. They had a son Damian before they too divorced in 1976.
Ronald died (age 58) in February 1981.[1] He was cremated.
