Ira Green was born in 1805, and died aged 66–67 on 7 Feb 1872 (date error on FAG). He was buried at Fairview United Methodist Cemetery, Morrisdale, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania.[1] Ira married in 1829 Margaret "Peggy" Hicks, who was born 20 Apr 1806 in Pennsylvania.
Listed on the tax list in 1857 for Graham Twp, Clearfield Co, PA, Ira was a circuit riding Evangelical United Brethren minister. It is said the Green's originally came from New England to New York, then possibly to Ohio, and then to Greene's Island, near Benezette, Elk County, Pennsylvania. They moved from Elk County to Clearfield County, Pennsylvania about 1849.
Ira and Margaret are both buried at the Fairview Evangelical United Brethren Cemetery beside the little church Ira preached at. Fairview Cemetery sits on the corner of the farm of Mrs. David Gill's father's along the Deer Creek Rd in Graham Twp. The church was originally United Brethren, later Evangelical United Brethren, and then Methodists.
Union Co. OH was not formed until 1820 with territory taken from Delaware (founded 1808), Franklin (founded 1803), Logan (founded 1818), and Madison (founded 1819) counties. Therefore Ira could not have been born there as commonly thought. County 1850 & 60 census records state PA as birthplace.
John Greene, who settled in Boston, MA in 1635 is considered by some references consulted as progenitor of the Greene family in the new world. He left Salesbury, Wilts County, England to help in the settlement of the New Colony. His ancestry traces back to Robert Green of Gilligham 1545.
Apparently John Greene occupied a position of importance in the affairs of the colony, and it is stated that he was the companion of Rodger Williams and a party to the purchase of Providence, Rhode Island, from the Indians in the quest for religious freedom. While no attempt is made here to trace the descendant of John Greene, it is noteworthy that a family tombstone in Kings Chapel Burial Ground, Boston, shows this devise, and it is also found on the bookplate of Gardener Greene, who married a sister of Lord Lynhurst. As with all very old families, it is unlikely that everyone bearing the name in American today can claim from the pioneers, but it is possible that they all stem from a common ancestry.
VERY UNLIKELY John Greene was progenitor of Greene family in America. See Thomas Greene arrived in MD on Ark & Dove in 1633.
