Biography
James Merrill Grimes was born November 17, 1800 in Nottingham, Rockingham, New Hampshire. He was the son of Samuel S. Grimes and his wife Abigail (Nabby) Dana Grimes.
According to the 1850 census the Grimes family was in Liberty. James was 51 and a farmer, Alvira 38, Jackson 17, William 12, Amanda 5. William and Amanda had been born in Michigan according to the census. In this census James gives his birth state as Vermont.
In 1860 James 60, his wife Alvira 48 and son William 22 lived in Liberty, McKean, Pennsylvania. In this census James gives his birth state as Massachusetts
