Biography

This profile is part of the Lanark Highlands, Ontario One Place Study.

Isabella Gunness was born about 1824, S-W 1/2 Lot21, conc 7, east of Harper Rd. Her maiden name was recorded as Gunniss and her residence Bathurst when she married 14 July 1845 Alexander Jackson of Dalhousie Twp., by Rev George Goodson, Wesleyan Minister in Perth. Witnesses were Christopher Gunniss and S Walker [1][2] When Alexander passed away 27 Sept 1853, Isabella would have been just barely pregnant, as son Alexander was born 16 March 1854 [3] [4]

Children:

  1. Christopher G[5]
  2. Marshall,[6] and
  3. Alexander.[7]

Isabella was a widow in the 1861 census with children Christopher, Marshal and Alexander, living on lot 2W of Conc 5 Dalhousie Twp., approx Lat: 44.965° N and Lon: 76.456° W, downstream a bit from her in-laws. By the 1871 census, Christopher had married Mary Barr and was living in Renfrew Twp. Isabella's holdings had increased to 150 acres
She died 15 May 1873 in Dalhousie Twp, Bathurst County, Ontario. Informant was Alexander Jackson of Dalhousie [8], likely the youngest son who would have been about 19.

Research note

Witness to the marriage was her brother Christopher, but who was S Walker? There is a Samuel Walker 61, enumerated on the same page of the 1851 census. Was he a relative, or just a good neighbour?
