Biography

Lazarus Gurley was born on 4 December 1757.3,4 He In a collection of Rev. War pay vouchers, in 1781, Lazaraus Gurley sold one hog to the commissioner of Johnston Co. to help feed the service men.

In 1787, a Lazarus Gurley is found in the census of Virginia living what appears to be next door to the Rev. George Gurley. Lazarus had one horse.

Researcher J.M. Bradley notes when he was reviewing the will of John Gurley, "Something wrong here, father cut him off with 5 shillings in the will." in 1781. He and John Gurley were involved in a land transfer John GURLEY and wife Elizabeth (transferred) to Lazarus GURLEY, 40£, 100 Acres in Johnston County on the NS of Neuse River and on the SS of Mocasson Swamp, it being part of a patent to John GURLEY the 15 Nov. 1762, beg a pine Edwards GURLEYS corner runs thence N35º W110p to a stake: S35º W146p to a Black jack: S35º E110p to a pine John GURLEYS right cor: a wright line to the beg… including the plantation thereon….

Wit. Jeremiah GURLEY, Lewis GURLEY, A. PEARCE. John GURLEY, Elizabeth (+) GURLEY. May Ct. 1781 proved by Arthur BARCCUM, Wm. WARD, CC. (K:232, Item 607, p.100, Abstracts v3) on 17 May 1781 at Johnston County, North Carolina.5 Lazarus Gurley served as part of the patrol in the area for Negroes who traveled at night without a pass. The law prescribed a punishment of forty lashes for those found to be with out a pass or with guns, swords or other weapons. in May 1782 at in the area of present day Princeton, Wayne County, North Carolina.6 He was listed on the in 1784 tax list of at Captain Joseph Boon's Company, Johnston County, North Carolina, his household's taxable property included 400 Acres, one free poll and one black poll.7 He and Lewis Gurley were involved in a land transfer when Lewis purchased two tracts of land. One for 100 acres on the south side of Mocoson Swamp that was the land their father, John Gurley deeded to Lazarus. The other for 300 acres also on the south side of Mocoson Swamp joining John Gurley's old line, Nathan Gurley and Cappses Meadow. Witnesses included their brother, Jeremiah Gurley on 17 January 1785 at Johnston County, North Carolina.8 Lazarus Gurley was listed on the in 1787 tax list of at St. Lukes Parish, Southampton County, Virginia, his household's taxable property included one horse.9,10

Lazarus was born in 1757. He was the son of John Gurley and Elizabeth Edwards. He passed away in 1796.
