"Chauncey Gurley of Chaplin, Connecticut, was born in Mansfield (Gurleyville), October 15, 1798. He was a natural mechanic, as were his brothers and father before him. In early life, he learned the blacksmith trade, which he carried on during his life, and was considered by his towns-people as an expert, and one of the best in doing all kinds of blacksmith work."
