John was baptised John Haldane Hadden and when he died it was as John Hadden Haldane.
Hadden
Mark Hadden Boatman & Anne Cowan his wife had a son born the 23d Janry 1818 & baptized the 25th of that month in presence of Jas Cleanan & the Revd George Murray & named John Haldane --
In 1855, when John registered the birth of his son David, it was noted that two boys had died prior to his birth.
John was employed as a Custom House Officer in Alloa from at least 1855 through to 1861. In the early part of the century Alloa had been a major port, but the gradual silting up of the Forth slowly reduced it's suitability for large shipping and it's importance had declined considerably during the latter part of the 1800s.
Sometime before 1871 John, Janet, Mark and Adam had moved to Ayr, Ayrshire and John continued to be employed as a Customs and Excise Officer. By the time of the 1881 Census John is still employed as a Customs Officer in Ayr and is living with his 19 year old son Adam and 21 year old grand daughter Mary Mitchell at 17 Harbour Street. Adam is employed as a Tailor and Mary as a Servant. There is no indication of John during the 1891 Census in Ayrshire, but he was there again when he passed away in 1893.
