Notes

Note NI61The Christening Records of the Kirkburton Parish, Kirkburton, Yorkshire, England shows a Simeon Haigh, son of John Haigh, being christened on 5 Sep 1786. It is believed that this is the Simeon Haigh profiled here. The date of christening would be only about three weeks after the known birth date of this Simeon Haigh, who was also known to have been born in Yorkshire. 1

Simeon Haigh was married in an Episcopal Church in New York. 1

There is disagreement about his birth date. A note in the Haigh Family Collection, believed written by "Aunt Sis," (his granddaughter, Anna Elizabeth Haigh) states he was born 10 Aug 1793, but cemetery records show his birth year as 1786. The 1786 date agrees with the censuses of 1820, 1850, and 1860. The 10 Aug 1793 date was probably a mistake by Aunt Sis, as this was almost certainly the birth date of his wife, Mary Newton. 1

He was probably married sometime in 1815, as his first child, Elizabeth, was born on 5 May 1816. Family tradition says that he was married at an Episcopal Church in New York, but no official record of the marriage has been found. Nor has any record of his entry into the United States from England been found. 1

In 1817-1818, he was living in Steubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio. He was a Mason in the Steubenville Lodge #45, and his daughter, Melissa, was born there in 1818. Sometime before 1820 he moved just across the Ohio River, to Brooke County, Virginia. 1

His occupation is listed as "Wool Manufacturer" in the 1820 census, the 1850 census and in the 1860 census. In the 1820 Federal Census of Manufacturers, he is listed as owning and operating a woolen mill in Brooke County, Virginia (now West Virginia). At that time the business employed two men and two "boys and girls," and produced 1500 yards of cloth annually. 1

In 1841 he moved to Franklin County, Indiana where he and his son, Simeon Jr., owned and operated a Woolen Mill in Metamora. 1

From sometime after 1860 until his death in 1865 he and his wife lived with their daughter, Melissa Atkinson in New Cumberland, West Virginia, where they both died. 1

He died at the home of his son-in-law, J. H. Atkinson, who was married to Simeon's daughter, Melissa.

Note: This is a transcription of the letter, which was sent to Judy Russell by Nancy Bender as an attachment to an E-mail (see HAIG-0127). According to Judy Russell (see HAIG-0129) the 1830 Federal Census of Population shows a Matthew Broadhead living in New York state. He is listed on the same page as a Charles Riddell. The Riddell family keep cropping up where the Haigh family occurs. George Hollingworth was in England at this time. John Hollingworth was his son. Simeon Haigh is shown in the 1820 Federal Census of Manufacturers as owning a woolen mill in Brooke County, Virginia (now West Virginia) which is directly across the Ohio River from Stubenville, Ohio. Portions of the paper the letter was written on have disintergrated, and the handwriting in places is unreadable. The letter is assumed to have been written to Simeon Haigh (Jr.) since it was found in the family Bible belonging to his descendants, plus some of the subjects mentioned in the letter seem to also suggest that its recipient was Simeon Haigh (Jr.). The portion of the letter on which the date was written has faded, or been torn, to the point that only the year, 1860, is visible. Repository: #R91 Call Number: -- File Format: JPG First page of the letter Note: This is a letter found in the Haigh Family Bible. There are two pages to the letter, and this is only the first page. Both pages have been copied, and are in the Haigh Family Documents folder. The original letter is in a plastic folder in photo album. Scrapbook: Y PHOTO -- Certainty: 3 Note: Original document. Simeon Haigh wrote a letter to "Son" [assumed to be his son, Simeon Haigh, Jr.] in 1860. He was in Pittsburgh and said he could be written to in care of J. P. Haigh [probably Joseph Haigh, another son], No. 64 Penn St., Pittsburgh. He says, in the letter, that he has talked to Joseph about "...if you should find the Rising Sun factory would answer you. if he [Joseph] would be [indecipherable (abled?)] towards helping to rais [sic] the first installment, telling him that I thought Son would have no objections to being [indecipherable] his share..." The main topic of the letter is this Rising Sun factory, which Simeon Jr. is negotiating to purchase from "Schofield." It also mentions that "...Joseph is going to rent the Forge of his wife..." and twice mentions "mama". In that year, according to Simeon Jr.'s obituary, and to Joseph Schofield's obituary, Simeon Haigh purchased Joseph Schofield's woolen mill in Rising Sun, Indiana, so this is further evidence that the letter was to Simeon Haigh, Jr. Several times in the letter Simeon Sr. mentions another son, clearly not the recipient of the letter, who is married to a "Mary." This son seems to have a 1/3 interest in a boat that Joseph owns. Whether this is one of the steamboats it is known Joseph owned, or simply a pleasure boat of some kind is not clear. Simeon Jr. himself was married to a "Mary," and she is also mentioned, but another son, Preston Clay Haigh, was also married to a "Mary," so this is probably the third son discussed.
