History of Keene

  • In 1735 sixty-three settlers paid five pounds each for lots in what was then called "Upper Ashuelot."[14][15] The settlement was formed to protect the Province of Massachusetts Bay.
  • In 1741 the boundary between Massachusetts and New Hampshire was set and Upper Ashuelot became part of New Hampshire.[16]
  • The town was attacked and burned by natives in 1747, during the King George's War. Colonists rebuilt the town in 1749.[15]
  • Application for incorporation as a town was made to the governor of New Hampshire early in 1750, with Captain Jeremiah Hall and Benjamin Guild as agents for the proprietors. (p 14)[14]
  • Upper Ashuelot was regranted in 1753 and given the name 'Keene' after Sir Benjamin Keene, the English minister to Spain.

Research Notes

  • Jesse Hall Sr's father (so this Jesse's grandfather) Jeremiah Hall was one of the original proprietors of Upper Ashuelot/Keene and was in the meeting in Concord on 27 Jun 1734 to organize the area. (p 3)[14] Jeremiah was also the first doctor in the town. (p 6)[14] Ten acres of upland was granted to Jeremiah and others in 1738.(p 228)
