Biography

The son of Peter Halsey and Mary (Van Vleet) Halsey, Robert Halsey was born in Dexter Township, Michigan[citation needed] in 1835. He migrated west with his family west to the new state of Michigan, taking up residence in Lima Township, in Washtenaw County.[1]

War broke out and Robert enlisted as a Private in the Michigan 1st Volunteer Infantry, mustering into Company H in June of 1861, and rising to the rank of Corporal; he was discharged in March of 1863.[2][3] After his discharge, he registered for the Civil War draft, registering in Washtenaw County Michigan in June of 1863, when he was 25.[4]

Robert went west, residing in 1870 in Walla Walla, Washington, boarding in the home of farmer William Sanders and his wife, Carrie, and working as a teamster.[5] By 1880, he lived alone in Whitman, Washington, farming.[6]

By 1890, Robert lived in Pactola, South Dakota, nothng on the 1890 Civil War Veteran Census that he had suffered a gunshot to his right leg during his Civil War service.[3] In 1900, at the age of 63, Robert was a resident of the National Home for Disabled Soldiers in Hot Springs, South Dakota.[7] He passed away there[citation needed] at the age of 67 and is buried at State Veterans Home Cemetery in Hot Springs.[8]
