John Hammond was born about 1809 in Essex, England.
He married Martha Nott on 22 June 1829 at Saffron Walden, Essex, England.[1]
They had children in England, then in late 1853, the family migrated to South Australia on the Hyderabad. They arrived at Port Adelaide on 14 March 1854.[2]
A Hammond family from Middlesex was on the same voyage - Henry W., 27, carpenter; Jane, 25; and Jane, 1.[2]
Martha died on 3 June 1854 in Adelaide, less than three months after arriving in her new home land.[3]
In South Australia, he lived at Myponga, Alma Plains and Adelaide.[1]
John married again to Elizabeth Mills (nee Allen) on 18 February 1864 at St Stephen Church, WIllunga.[1] He was 55, she was 56, daughter of Robert Allen.[4]
John died on 13 May 1894 aged 86 at Alma, South Australia.[5]
